Each Of The Four Mogul Techniques Require A Different Reflex Speed

Print this pagePrint This Page

control | balance | tactics

Deciding which of these four mogul technique routes is the best for you is a function of many factors: your age, speed of your reflexes, your level of physical conditioning, the size of moguls on the run, the steepness of the run and the snow conditions on the run. But, most importantly, the decision should be based upon your own personal goal as it relates to mogul skiing.

Is your goal to use a mogul technique that allows you to ski a mogul run as fast as you can ... on the edge of crazy?

Or, are you older, with slowing reflexes and want to make sure to avoid any chance of ending up in physical therapy - so you want to use a mogul technique that enables you to ski moguls slowly and carefully?

Or, somewhere in the middle? Your own skiing goal should be the ultimate basis for determining your preferred mogul technique.

The Difference Between Each Of These Four Mogul Techniques Is The Speed Of Reflexes Required

Two of these mogul technique lines - the Zipper Line method for skiing moguls and The Trough Line method for skiing moguls - lightening-fast or fast reflexes. These two mogul skiing lines are most appropriate for young, aggressive and/or strong skiers.

Two of these mogul technique lines - the Green Line method for skiing moguls and The Blue Line method for skiing moguls - do not require fast reflexes. These two mogul skiing lines are most appropriate for less-aggressive, more conservative and/or skiers who fatigue easier.

Since the Aspen Colorado BUMPS FOR BOOMERS ® program is targeted at the needs of aging Baby Boomers and senior skiers we will make judgments and recommendations about the best route style from this point of view.

Mogul Technique - Our Observations On The Different Ways To Ski Moguls

When comparing the alternative mogul techniques discussed above we can make the following three observations:

(1) The Zipper Line mogul technique is the fastest route down the moguls, the Trough Route mogul technique is the second fastest route, the Blue Line mogul technique is the third fastest route and the Green Line mogul technique is the slowest way to ski a mogul run.

(2) The slower that you can ski moguls the better chance you have of staying in balance and the greater the likelihood that you will remain in control.

(3) The slower your mogul skiing is, the less dependent you are on the speed of your reflexes.

Note: If you learn a mogul technique that depends upon reflex speed then you will also need to have progressively faster reflexes as pitch of the run increases.

Our Recommendation: Given that the majority of Baby Boomers and senior skiers have a preference for staying balanced, remaining in control, are more interested in good form than skiing fast ... and are facing declining reflexes as they age, we believe that the Green Line mogul technique is the best initial approach, and fastest way, for a Boomer to learn to ski moguls.

As your confidence and skills grow you may choose to transition to the Blue Line mogul technique or even a faster line. But, the Green Line is the proper ski technique to use when first learning to ski moguls because it provides the maximum speed control and the quickest route to achieving confidence in off-piste terrain.
